What the Hell!

So many of you must be aware of Devendra Khandelwal, the man who directs many of the short social service films shown before a movie or during the interval - you know, with really bad actors masquerading as real people? He's made movies that tell you to not litter and be aware and not let dooshwalas, ration guys, petrol guys cheat you etc. His latest offering, if we could call it that, is called "Dont waste your Time"!!!! The opening shot zooms into a young woman lost in thought on her balcony, with lines that go something like "Do you waste your time?" and, changing to a scene with three women chatting and laughing at home over cups of tea, "Do you spend it in meaningless chatter?" All in Hindi haan, and goes on to tell you how you should make yourself useful like learning or teaching something (showing a woman learning to knit and another one teaching children).
Can you make me a list of things you see wrong with this picture??? Thats just blatant sexism!
First of all, its really good to have free time once in a while. Catch up with friends, watch a movie, daydream, take a nap - these are the mind's ways of refreshing itself, of taking a break from the task at hand to maybe awaken a new perspective on it.
An idle mind is the devil's workshop and all that but OH MY GOD, dont tell me men dont gossip! What about all the Time THEY waste watching sports, playing videogames killing each other, and talking about girls and all that? Not to mention all the sleeping they do! Just because they supposedly go to office from 9 to 5 doesnt exactly mean theyre hard at work. Ive been there enough to know there's some amount of MSN, jokes and erotic forwards involved!
And the worst part is, this STUPID film is shown during a gripping movie like Parzania, making you slap your hand on your forehead in disgust and COMPLETELY ruining the careful buildup of emotion for the next half. Rather than something celebrating diversity or something...
Laughter is good for health, and daydreaming is better than doing karma that ties you further to the earth! And besides, tea manufacturers would lose business if women stopped wasting time. So you see, its actually good for the economy.
But seriously, he government really has to stop telling us what to do in our private lives. This is too much nonsense. Next it will be telling us to stay in purdah and how to wear our dupatta in a becoming modest fashion.

Oy! Sexist ad alright. For soem folks that time to relax is probably all they got.
Does this guy make films for the govt that get shown during movie intermissions?
I also read about the movie and your review about Blood Diamonds, enjoyed reading the latte and am dismayed at the religious bigots re the former.
Less busy these days or its still crazy?

I haven't seen the film. (Hope to catch the same one or similar ones next month in Bombay) So, my comments might not be a 100% accurate.

Consider this: If they were to show a similar film where the camera were to pan on 3 guys playing video games or gossiping at work immediately after that film in question - Would that be compensation enough?

If Yes - Then why bother about sexism here. Look at the intent.
If No - Then why?

I do agree that the government has no right poking its nose in every matter. But, if you look at this particular message positively, then it ain't that bad anyways.

Hi sanjay!
Less busy, well, more so with dance and the little i can contribute to planning the wedding, and facing staunch opposition in that area too sometimes, but glad I can blog a bit again!
Hussain,
Hi!
Jimit,
Well, it might, but it would work better if he alternated the images. I dont question the intent; if all the aunties (and uncles) i know had better things to do than be a menace to young society... in this, it seems liek all he intends to show is that women should do womanly things like knit or teach children, instead of taking a typing class or join the rotary or something. so it remains a bit sexist either way.
X-jack,
Thank you! Blogs are wonderful places, you learn a lot and also have fun along the way! (my god, I sound like a teacher!) Thanks for stopping by!
