Movie Review and Petition: Please Sign! Parzania and Craziness

I'm really glad this movie has been getting rave reviews because its a film that Ive wanted to see since I heard about it in 2003, and because its a story that deserves to be told, a side of humanity and politics in our own country that deserves to be witness firsthand by us, the very people who put such excuses for human beings in power.

Parzania is based on a true story about a Parsi boy Azhar from Ahmedabad who has been missing since the Godhra Riots in early 2002. NRI gujarati Rahul Dholakia directs this film starring Naseeruddin Shah, Sarika, Parzan Dastur, Pearl Barsiwala and Corin Nemec, the first four playing the loving and devout lower-middle class Parsi family living in a chawl type enclosed area, where everyone is like family and Hindus Muslims and Sikhs alike share an easy camaraderie, and the latter a disillusioned and somewhat dysfunctional Protestant dysfunctional American who is writing his college thesis on Gandhi and simultaneously trying to find himself. He persists in acquiring bootlegged liquor despite the statewide ban on it (as we all know). Parzan is a loving boy, a cricket fan, very close to his sister, and has created a land for himself named Parzania where the teachers are talking donkeys and the walls are made of chocolate and the mountains of ice cream and you can eat them, except for 5 minutes before it rains, with elaborate rituals for getting there and making wishes come true.

Their world comes to an end when the Hindu fundamentalists unleash their devilish wrath on the innocent masses post-Godhra. It shows that the atacks were planned, in complicity with the police force and the media and the heads of state, that the media published Muslim business names and addresses, that that day, the police stood by and laughed while people pleaded with them for help, houses burned, women were raped and men and children slaughtered. Right after curfew is declared and the police move away, thousands of men show up at their chawl, demanding the addresses of the Muslims. The Parsi family is persecuted for being non-Hindu, and Shehnaz and her children Parzan and Dilshad try to escape with the saffronists giving chase. In the chaos that ensues, Shehnaz is forced to jump from the balcony as Parzan gets lost. For days Cyrus Pithawala roams from staton to station, being forced to bribe policemen, his complaint ignored, till in desperation he attempts to fast for 9 days and nights to please Ahura Mazda and get teh answers he needs. In the meantime, the Muslims start planning a counter attack. Shehnaz is compelled to sign a testimony stating that the political party that is attempting to help her had the situation under control. After much ado, the National Human Rights Commission steps in and attempts to get witness accounts of the happenings that day, and many lie, intimidated by the police and extremists. The Pithawalas do too, safe as they are, staying with Nemec at his place, who meanwhile, sees 'secular' India for what it really has become - a fucking mess.

Some may call the movie biased. I call it a fairly objective, albeit sympathetic account of the feelings and experiences of the bemused civilians who have lost their loved ones and everything they have in this war against only the warmongers know what. The people who create warfare, those with no hearts or consciences, who after killing thousands can go about sticking posters of a bugger whose words are laced with the arsenic of double meaning, for whom violence and the spreaidng of hatred is just business as usual... how can you even call them humans? People with so much passion that it consumes everything around them - what would they do if their own families were killed? How can you hate someone blindly, someone you dont know? How can you hate anyone at all, unless they are beyond redemption? And such fundamentalist, unreasonable, violent actions only succeed in creating hate for those that condone and perpetuate such dastardly means of power. I feel as though ths paragraph is redundant because I already vented in teh earlier review, but violence at home is too lcose for comfort, and to think that someone somewhere could harbour feelings of hatred for the people I hold dear, whatever caste, religion, sex they may be, is very discomfiting indeed. What did this carnage accomplish? A newfound fear and caution towards the sate of Gujarat and its people? A people who destroyed the lovely Hussain ki Gufaein because they refused to understand his M. F. Husain's paintings in the light that he had painted them in? People who do not delve deeper than the surface, to see things for what they really are? People for whom a name, a pronunciation, an address, brings forth illogical stereotypes?

And the police... almost worse than these bastard party workers (oh misdirected Nazi types, may they rot in a hell far worse than any they could possibly make - though Im not excusing them from any blame, OH NO). Party workers are uneducated, idiotic, greedy small minded people. The police are supposed to be committed to the upholding of the values established in our constitution, one made with so much care and attention to detail, derived from some of the most developed nations of the world, even holding the debatable merit of being the longest constitution in the world - that of its establishment as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic". Secular seems to have been forgotten, democratic ignored, and republic taken entirely too seriously. Parties think they can get away with whatever they want, as long as they and the police make accountability a near impossibility. And we people, we who seem to only have the choice between the devil and the deep blue sea during election time - perhaps we too are to blame for allowing such parties to be in power, on the basis of a rhetoric, that though may see pleasing and patriotic enough to our ears, has quite terrible implications to our population should the means be implemented for achieving such a spurious end.

When law and order itself fall apart at will, what security do we as a nation have? Yes, political parties are ignorant, yes, they have pretty dubious means of achieving their ends, but when a police force cannot keep the situation and protests under control so as to ensure that civilians and daily economic and social life arent harmed, then what are we to expect? The compelling acting of all the characters in the movie amply demonstrates that.

Only when greed and corrupion are weeded from the very dredges of our society, will we flourish as a nation that can be called true to its pledges.

Oh, yes, the Government of Gujarat (well, the Bajrang Dal) has in typical fashion in 'co-operation' with cinema owners (yeah right) banned the release of the film in Gujarat, the one state that really needs to be shown this movie, and the mockery its citizens have made of this massacre and Gandhi. if you have such a problem with gujaratis or hindus ...please convert...as far as the violence against muslims is concerned...read the history of india in general and gujarat in particular...what happened post-godhra will look like a picnic compared to what the muslims did in india over 6 centuries.
so spare me your idealist bullcrap
PS: are you bong?

Just a thought looking at comments like the one above - Why don't you post something on the nicest, weirdest, nastiest, ... comments you have received for the hundreds of blogs you have written. That would be pretty interesting. :)

Wow, its so tempting to flame back on you thebania, but it wouldnt contribute anything to the point im trying to make, so Ill desist! Obviously, as familiar as you claim to be with Gujarat's history, you aren't acquainted with it's most famous export, Gandhi, who, may I remind you, said an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

You talk as though Hindu kings havent used any violence throughout history. Yes, there is violence DURING an initial encounter with any foreign group, but that subsides once the foreign group integrates into the mainstream, as the Muslims HAVE successfully done by and large. And dont forget we have had many great Muslim rulers as well. Yes, Gujarat was ruled by the Muslims, but it isnt NOW, so what is your complaint?

Dont even think you can get away with comparing the violence over 6 centuries with 50 years. What the Muslims did for India Hindus havent been able to do for themselves or for others for centuries.

And there werent political parties back then, was was pretty much a monopolistic ruler. This violence is being created by people elected by the people in power - people whom they have sworn to protect.

And dont forget, idealism can create change, not your animosity. Id like to see people like you survive in a world of your own making. Once you drive away the Muslims, whom will you then turn on? Violent people arent really angry with anyone else - they're just really pissed off with what they deem as their own impotency in life and try to assert power in the physical way - by far the easiest and most immediately gratifying way. Unfortunately, gratification is addictive.

And to answer your question, I dont have a problem with Gujaratis or Hindus, I happen to be both, and a far prouder and, may I add, knowledgeable one than the average at that, so please, spare me your judgments.

hmmm....
"Yes, there is violence DURING an initial encounter with any foreign group, but that subsides once the foreign group integrates into the mainstream, as the Muslims HAVE successfully done by and large. And dont forget we have had many great Muslim rulers as well. Yes, Gujarat was ruled by the Muslims, but it isnt NOW, so what is your complaint?"

lets see....india has seen its share of invaders..none of whom excepting the musalmans indulged in mass-conversions , rapine , slave-trade , destruction of temples and their conversion into mosques (if hinduism is a 5000 yr old religion...where are the bloody temples?...acc to one estimate 3000 large hindu temples have been converted into mosques and thousands have been destroyed..the popular ones which were converted were (ram janmabhoomi/ babri masjid in ayodhya , gyanvyapi mosque in varanasi , krishna janmabhoomi in mathura , somnath in veraval (restored by sardar patel inspite of severe muslim opposition in 1948) , the vithala temple in pandharpur amongst others).

"Yes, there is violence DURING an initial encounter with any foreign group, but that subsides once the foreign group integrates into the mainstream, as the Muslims HAVE successfully done by and large."

you sure about that?
if that was true...why ewas pakistan created?
if that was true why did the hindu population in pakistan (east and west) go from 25-30% in 1947 to 3% in west paistan and 8% in east pakistan(bangladesh)
if that is true why were the kashmiri pandits thrown out of kashmir and why are they forced to live like migrants in their own country.
if that is true why do the muslims have their own religious law in a supposedly "secular" country.
if that is true why do muslims form practically 40% of all prison inmates in states like gujarat , Mah and delhi while forming 10-12% of the population???
if that is true why are muslim names common in any illegal /criminal activity you hear of...(read the fucking newspaper for a change)
moreover ...you add that,
"dont forget we have had many great Muslim rulers as well. Yes, Gujarat was ruled by the Muslims, but it isnt NOW, so what is your complaint?"

first of all...gujarat was never completely ruled by the muslims...if that had been so...it wouldve been in pakistan currently
secondly , what great islamic king do you know of..except akbar...the man who rid the delhi court of mullahs ..took away islam's status as the religion of the state and banned islamic practises ( shariah courts , jiziah tax on non-muslims) , the best part was tht he ceased to be a muslim and adopted a new religion din-e-illahi which was a fusion of hinduism(advaita) and sufi islam....so i dont think he exactly qualifies as a muslim ruler
i challenge you to find me one benovelent muslim ruler other than akbar who wasnt really muslim in the first case
and this is the best part....

" Dont even think you can get away with comparing the violence over 6 centuries with 50 years. What the Muslims did for India Hindus havent been able to do for themselves or for others for centuries."

youre totally right....the mass murders , rapine , destruction , slave-taking and open loot of my country that the muslims indulged in , hasnt been paid back yet by the hindus and of course...the mass-murders , slave-taking , rapine , loot and destruction of places of worship (the Haga Sophia and many other greek monuments) , that the muslims have indulged in throughout history (iran , egypt , spain , greece , north africa , south-east asia and europe lately) will never be perpetrated by the hindus on the rest of the world

why the f*** do you think the parsis came to gujarat in the first place?????
they came here because your noble muslims wanted to rape/convert them ....isnt it bloody ironic?

so as i said the last time...its very easy being a wannabe pseudo peace of crap who talks nonsense,
its very difficult calling a spade a spade

PS: gujarat's greatest export isnt gandhi or his psycho ways..(funny i have been reading the bhagwad for 15 years now and nowhere does it talk about one-sided non-violence...gandhi was just a coward who slept with his neice and
distorted vedic dharm to the fullest...if godse hadnt killed him in 1948...you mkightve had a muslim name today..
so as i said the last time

spare me your idealist bullcrap

So lets see… I was too tempted to comment on the debate going on here on the pseudo idealism v/s genuine idealism within the context of Hindus- Muslims, Gujrat-akbar and a lot more…which I think both u guys have your posts to refer to…

Something that I wanted to add. I wonder whether facts are ever at the root cause of any of these opinions and actions ever. There is no end to a debate that claims which side killed first and therefore which side deserves a punishment and so on and so forth. The BASIC FACT OF life is that any event can always be looked at from as many viewpoints as there are people looking at it. That itself proves that there is NO REAL FACT.. There are only interpretations. Majority of people may agree to one interpretation and therefore it may start getting believed to be a FACT, but that’s not what it is.

So in case of our debate, for the group of people who wish to look at the Muslim invasion as a form or torture and use that for the justification of either babri-masjid or post godhra and god knows how many more of these justified attempts THATS THEIR COICE and RIGHT!!!!! Just as much it is for someone who wishes to recognize that the past is the past.. Wishes to live by apparently pseudo idealism…and therefore choose to have a more peaceful life!

What NEEDS To be kept in mind is that when you choose a certain way, it also implies that there will be a reaction to that choice and you should be prepared for that. So if you CHOOSE to believe in the tit-for –tat attitude then you should also be prepared to accept that your lesson will be Perceived by someone else as an attack and therefore they can also come back and teach you a lesson… the end result of all of this….endless fights and lessons…

As against if you choose to recognize the futility of all of this…to literally live and let live…you are likely to have an end result of, if nothing else.. personal mental peace and stability.

Once again.. this is a viewpoint and not a FAT so there cant be an argument against this saying THIS CANT BE…if you choose not to agree to what I have said its your choice.

The only QUESTION therefore that YOU need to answer for yourself is WHY you would want to hold the view you do? Where does it really stem from? And is it likely to get you anything? Would you rather be BITTER about things and people and therefore in a continuous process of taking revenge (either directly or indirectly) or you Rather be peaceful and recognize that if YOU have your OWN sense of SECURITY you wont feel threatened by ANYONE or ANYTHING and therefore you will be able to keep yourself out of the endless spirals of revenges.

As I said before. the Choice is only your! if chaos, fights, violence, blame get you greater peace of mind and happiness as against peace, letting go and happiness and a sense of being complete by yourself… Cheers to you!

P.S: and let me add one last thing. You may think this applies only to how you view Muslims. But if you actually have the guts to look within yourself honestly…high chances that this is how you view most of the things around you. Whether it’s your work, relationships, etc.…blame stemming out of bitterness and insecurity usually applies to everything in our lives. Religious fundamentalism just happens to be one of its overt reactions. If it were not for the Muslims who gave people like that apparently enough reasons to feel threatened I am sure another groups or persons would have been found.. there is no end to this…(as your posts itself reflect, you have already found multiple target points…Muslims, Gandhi …and I am sure your list is much longer).

I have written this comment knowing fully well that I am giving you the opportunity to now add one more person to be labeled as a pseudo idealist/any other label that you may have in your bag or of course you have that choice of perhaps giving this one more thought before you get rid of it (there again I know is a 0.000001 % chance of the latter happening)

Hoping that you prove me wrong!

Only hoping in my realistic idealist way that more people will be able to see the futility of the spirals that everyone seems to be getting into! (Knowing fully well I have no control to push people out)

To the Bania, coz I had no way of contacting you personally, I am having to use Aryani's comment box. I am taking the trouble of writing here despite the knowledge that neither of you will come back and look. However just in case you do...
You Bania are an idiot. All you people, hiding behind pages of history need to face an angry mob flashing swords and guns in your face. People who do not know you, thirsty for your blood chasing you down an alley while you quake with a fear you have never known before. Piss in your pants. Run like you have never run before. only because, you were born to a particular faith purely by chance. In your private time you seek refuge in a set of beleifs that others like to call `hinduism', `islam' or `buddhism' or whatever it is.
This is to all you idiots out there who beleive that to set historical records straight, you have to indulge in genocide today. Rape, loot, murder and riot. ... here is a prayer from my heart, may something like that happen to one you love, may you suffer being orphaned my friend, may somebody you know get raped and brutally murdered all in the name of faith. And then I'll ask you if it was worth it.
Don't justify what you do not have a clue about.
I am a devout hindu... victim of a religious riot. I have no aspirations of setting an imperfect history straight, just want to live my life with whatever dignity I have left.
so dear Bania, fuck you and your ilk. You have no idea...

To the anonymous so called traitor hindu and to innocent Aranyi. Stick to the facts annonymous idiot and dont talk of what happened nd not what not and what you wish for. Wishes of people like you dont come true anyways.

Bania is right about what the Muslims did to India over last 6 centuries. Remember Sikhism was born because of tortures of Muslims.

What happened post Godhra was wrong but that was an extreme reaction to what is being carried out systematically in our country . Aryani , some of you guys use words like secularism and give example of Gandhi etc.

DO you even know what is secularism . IT is all religions are equal in the eyes of the state , right .

Is that the case in India.. In southern states why so much reservation for Muslims, why is Manmohan so keen for religion based reservation as well in education and jobs if he is secular.

Why does he want to start a new banking system based on Muslim law which even RBI says is not needed and detrimental even ?

Why more loan for Muslims than Hindus on so called minority inclusion. Is a Hindu poor using different ccurrency from Muslim poor ?

Shall i go on

MF Mothe... F Hussain paints 3 Hindu gods nude and the pseduo intellecctual page 3 party poppers are sympathising with this senile bastard whose property is attached... and what about the guy in denmark who painted a bomb in Turban of a guy who MAY HAVE A BEEN A DEPICTION of prophet mohammed....WEre these 2 people treated equally.

No body gives 10 minutes to people being burnt alive in Godhra - do they deserve some sympathy or not!

And dont you guys give me crap that Muslims are backwards and blah and blah and blah adn blah.

Azim premji second richest indian is Muslim. YK Hameid Cipla Chief is Muslim. Habil Khorakiwala is mUslim. Maturity of muslim are poor and downtrodde and hating everyone else cause they dont have formal education and then live by 16 century laws...

Why should hindues subsidize these Muslims. Muslims ruled india for last 4 centureis before british...

SO HOW IN THE BLAZES CAN U SAY HINDUS HAVE HAD IT BETTER.... SAVE THE BULLSHIT PSYCHOBABBLE OF SECULARISM AND START CALLING A SPADE A SPADE .
Hindus have been smarter , they have gone for formal education, they have aped the west, they have seperated education, religion, life, culture and business. You cannot blame us for it.
Today india is anything but secular courtesy useless congress government.

Dear oppressed india,
I do not have the time to sit and respond to the idiotic case you seemed to have made of supporting whatever it is that you are trying to support. when trying to make a point at least pretend to be articulate and factualy correct.
I will only talk about the abuse you hurled at mfh.
For 12 years now, I've had a statue of Goddess Saraswati in my house. This 3 ft tall exquisitly carved peice of wood has graced my grand mothers house for over two decades before it was passed on to me. It has been carved by a south Indian woodworker in a small village near Madurai. The woodwork owes its style and provennance to temple architecure dating back centuries.
Let me describe the way in which the goddess is depicted in the said carving- long limbed, generously proportioned, ornate classical features. The goddess is holding her veena in her hands at her waist, below her breasts. There is no garment covering her body, just ornaments-- which by the way make no pretence of masking a nipple or shrouding a breast.
That is now gods and goddesses have been depicted for millenia within the realm of `respectable' hinduism.
From when did hinduism start fearing the naked corporeal body?Life, as is thaught in the hindu scriptures, is a way of transcending matter, improving, evolving, flowing... probably why hindus have eductaed and bettered their lot in this country in the first place?
Why would I want to go back to the dark ages because idiots like you see only what you are shown...
Coming back to the nudity and art question. The current fashion of rendering deities in bold flashy colours swathed in garish fabric and jweles is only two centuries old. Mostly a result of a few Indian artists abandoning their traditions, under pressure to prove their respectability to prude victorian sensibilities of the british.
It is funny that eons old depiction of the deity in the nude did not matter to us until a muslim guy painted the goddess so.
Have you heard about Kalidasa's description of Saraswati in meghdoot? I dbout too.
I am not going to waste any breath here about how MFH has in various other ways bought a lot of respectablity to the country.
Finally don't go brandishing what is happening to anti-islamists art in countries out side India... because if you want us to become like them, I truly dread the future that awaits us.
