Christmas in New York

There's just something about the Christmas holiday spirit here in New York that Ive never experienced before, even during Diwali in Bombay (or my first Diwali here, which, while very hectic, what with poojas, house decorating, dinners, exchange of gifts and sweets and dressing up, felt very lowkey and privatebecause it was just a small dispersed community, and not an entire nation, along with economy, celebrating it). The spirit is cheerful and expansive, advertisements are heartwarming (even though at the back of your mind you know there's cold-blooded commercialisation and number-juggling going on). Streets are thronged with people carrrying shopping bags, all red-cheeked and fuzzily-dressed, Starbucks comes out with festive drinks like gingerbread latte and eggnog latte, and trees and wreaths are up for sale on the streets, along with scarves and gloves. But the most spellbinding for me are the brilliant window displays and in-house store decorations on Fifth Avenue, particularly the 50s. The massive snowflake suspended over the avenue, twinkling golden in the fuzzy twilight, the Rockefeller Plaza tree and Nutcracker statue, the music over the speakers under the awnings of certain stores, make time pass by so quickly that you've walked 20 streets in wonder when once you'd have grumbled at traffic lights and counted the number.
So, i decided to share some of the dceorations that fill me with awe with you guys, almost allof hwom are not in New York. Below are some links to big department stores and their window displays. I love Bergdof Goodman and Bloomingdales this year. Saks' theme is Snowpeople, which hubby didnt like but I found quietly elegant.

There's really nothing quite like Christmas in NYC. Portland is not too bad, but it just doesn't compare.
