She was contemplating existence when the ashtray crashed into a million little splinters on her thigh. “How ironic” she thought, as she felt a thousand pinpricks as the invisible shards embedded themselves in her skin. The microscopic droplets of red blotted the goosebumps as she watched, fascinated.

I think all authors (which I'm certainly not) write best about what they know best - the world they inhabit physically or mentally. I'm not sure if all writing is even semi-autobiographical though - people would be leading pretty strange lives if it was!
